Jiu Jitsu Postcard from Peru

Think you gas on the mats? Try doing the same thing at altitude! Luckily, this postcard from Peru shows that BJJ is alive and well over there...

BJJ in Lima – Peru

Hi guys, I am Pierre and I’m a Peruvian blue belt from Guigo Jiu Jitsu Academy in Peru, a subsidiary of Guigo Jiu Jitsu based in Sao Paulo – Brazil, led by Luiz Guilherme (Guigo), who is a black belt under Jorge Pereira (direct student of Rickson Gracie)...

BJJ in Peru does not have a long history. All started at the end of the 90’s, when some practitioners of other martial arts, on their trips out of the country, had direct contact with BJJ practitioners, learned some techniques and then taught and practiced it with friends on their return to Peru. At this time very few people knew what BJJ was. They practiced by watching videos or magazines that were brought from abroad. the highest ranking guys were blue belts.

Around about 2001, Alex Ferreira, a Brazilian fighter from Gracie Humaita in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil, student from Juquinha (black belt under Royler Gracie), opened an academy in a popular district in Lima. At this time practitioners increased and BJJ started to grow a little more.

Shortly after, with the arrival of Tony de Souza from the USA (Peruvian MMA fighter, BJJ black belt, UFC competitor and maker of the “Peruvian Necktie” technique) began to open more academies and BJJ spread to more people. Then began the tournaments between academies, where practitioners increasingly showed their skills.

Currently there are less than ten schools in Lima and a few outside the capital. Every year we have two or three BJJ tournaments and many more submission wrestling tournaments during the year.

We have five Peruvian black belts in the country and a couple more who live and compete in the USA. Within a short time that amount will increase because there are a big bunch of very good brown belts, purple belts and  blue belts in the country right now.

The scene is not as big yet as in other countries however we have had representatives in the major tournaments in Brazil and the United States (Pan-American, World Championship, Copa do Mundo, among others) and many fellow Peruvians have won medals and showed what good fighters they are.

If you ever visit Lima you are most welcome to train with us. I leave some pics of my team. Greetings to you all!
