Roll, Adapt, Win are a fresh new fightwear brand from the US. They sent me some of their tee designs and I thought it would be nice to speak to them and find out more about the brand:
Q: What is roll adapt win all about?
Roll Adapt Win is about producing a simple, detailed, and
clean product with lasting power. So many brands become obsolete these days
because they focus on fads or what so and so brand is doing. We don’t design
for obsolescence, we don’t follow fads, and the result is something everyone
perceives, to be fresh and authentic. The whole premise behind the brand is our
message, Roll Adapt Win. The minute we try to keep up with the Joneses will be
the same minute we lose our identity.
Q: Who are the people behind it?
Blue belt, Jei Kennedy. Purple belt, Ethan Wakeley. Blue belt,
Sonia Sillan. Mentor, Henry Hiltner.
Q: How did you come up with the name, and what does it mean?
The name has always been an expression used on Jei’s blog,
Journey Jiu-Jitsu. It wasn’t until later on that we decided to turn it into a lifestyle,
a movement of sorts. Our belief is that rolling imitates life. Renzo Gracie
once said, “the secret of this sport is, while you're the nail, hang in there,
let them hit you, until the day you become the hammer, then you smash them
back!" Like life, jiu-jitsu is a process. It takes a lot of trial and
error to eventually come out on top, the hammer. You have to remain positive,
no matter what position you are in, and only think about your next move! This
will continually be the message behind Roll Adapt Win. Always moving, forever
evolving, until one day you are where you want to be.
Q: Who designs your stuff and where do you source your ideas
from?
Our principle designers are Ethan Wakeley and Jei Kennedy. We
don’t really source our ideas from anywhere, we just do what we think looks good.
If we aren’t head over heels about a design or if it doesn’t fit in with our
overall aesthetic, we trash it.
Q: What plans do you have for the brand in the next few
months?
We don’t know, what we don’t plan to do is release a gi.
Everyone has a gi, but nobody is doing anything innovative with the gi itself.
Why clump ourselves in that mix if we aren’t doing anything different? For now,
we just want to focus on apparel. Grapplers just don’t grapple, so we want to
release products that can be worn outside the gym. We will also be traveling a
lot to different events and tournaments in order to increase brand awareness,
don’t be surprised if you see us in Malaysia, lol.
