I teamed up again with BJJ comic artist Mr Bong Abad who runs his Gawakoto clothing company to produce this piracy themed t-shirt.
Here's the story of how it all came together...
Bong and I were chatting one day about stuff including fake instructors, McDojos, the watering down of jiu jitsu. We also were moaning, as we usually do, about people who steal artwork and appropriate it for themselves. My artwork is frequently bootlegged by unscrupulous fightwear companies and academy owners. It dawned on us that the world was full of these so-called pirates. We decided to put out heads together and produce a t-shirt to demonstrate our hatred of pirates. Though we'd also like to point out, pirate imagery and folklore is totally cool!
I was tasked with the back t-shirt design and Bong took charge of the front. We invented a pirate character we dubbed Cap'n McDojo. He would be the baddie representing fake instructors, McDojo pirates, art thieves, bullies and just anyone in the martial arts world that gives the sport a bad name.
This is his early sketch:
which he inked by pen directly ontop of the pencil lines to produce this:
Here's my step through of work:
We're both pretty proud of this work. Art collaborations are a great way to bond over a shared love of drawing. It's a lot like BJJ friends from different clubs who meet up for a friendly roll.
