Hey guys. Head on over to the Facebook page of trendy fight appreal company Scramble and vote for your favourite T-shirt design. The winner with the most 'likes' will be made by Scramble into a real T-shirt*

When you go to the Scramble Facebook page, scroll down a bit to find the entries that begin with "TSHIRT IDEA No#"

You can like any of the five choices. They are as follows:

TSHIRT IDEA No1 - Honey badger (idea by Tom McGiveron). Meerkatsu says: "If I was ever reincarnated as an animal, the ratel would be it - most fearless and fearsome creature on four legs = total orsumness"

TSHIRT IDEA No2 - Fire Chicken, aka Basan (idea by Shane Chittenden). Meerkatsu says: "I was born in the year of the rooster! I can cockledoodledoo AND breathe fire!"

TSHIRT IDEA No3 - Foo dog/s (idea by Pablo Stanford). Meerkatsu says: "When my parents owned a restaurant, Foo dogs were our logo, I have fond memories of these guardians of Buddha and would rock an wicked design"

TSHIRT IDEA No4 - Evil Koi carp (suggested by Mateusz Kaczynski)
Meerkatsu says: "Lots of folk suggested Koi, but Mateusz went to greater depth by suggesting it have evil fangs and spikey fins. Me like!"

TSHIRT IDEA No5 - Japanese monkey (first suggested by Andy Roberts). Meerkatsu says: "Who can resist the cheeky and lovable Japanese macaque? I would draw it with a monkey steals peach theme."

To help you choose, I've sketched very quickly an initial T-shirt concept** for each of the five animals. Just 'like' the one you, um, like!

Thanks very much!

*pending if I can get my lazy ass to draw it properly...might take time, but that is the plan.

**Final T-shirt design subject to lots of changes, drawings does not represent eventual design.

Europe's first ever magazine dedicated to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Jiu Jitsu Style - flew out of the printers and into my grubby mitts today. Oh my God! It is a work of absolute wonder. Helped of course by my lovely photos of World Champ Michael Langhi, an interview with Pippa Granger and my Five Hand Slaps article. But let's put aside for one moment who wrote what and just gaze at the beauty of this periodical. Awwwwwww!

As Roger Gracie says in the introductory guest editorial:

"It's about time we had a magazine dedicated solely to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this side of the Atlantic - it is a great step in the development of the art."

ROGER 'GREATEST FIGHTER EVER' GRACIE!!!!!

So come on, if that is not an awesome enough endorsement for your ears, I don't know what is.

You can buy single copies or order a subscription through this link:

By the way, have you 'liked' my Facebook fanpage yet? Do it! Cos tomorrow I'm giving away a pristine brand new, unread copy of Jiu Jitsu Style to the person who answers my tricky question, heh heh heh!!!

Summary
An ultra light model from one of the most familiar names in the fightwear business. Manto's pearlweave gi jacket has a roomy cut and the rip stop trousers are the most comfortable trousers of their kind I have ever tested. Some small niggles aside, this is an extremely good, feather light gi for competition, hot weather or just regular training.

Introduction
Manto are well known for producing creative and colourful fightwear but for many years they seem only to have produced one gi model. At the end of last year, they made a headlong charge into the BJJ gi market with the release of three new models: Manto Select (budget model), Manto 3.0 (bling model) and this model, the (ultra light) Manto Evolution. I must admit I did kinda fancy the colourful patches and embroidery of their 3.0 standard model, but as I will discuss, the other aspects of the Evolution model more than make up for its lack of bling.

Yes, that's right win a cool, brand spanking new T-shirt designed by those badasses at Scramble. It's the latest in their line-up of sublime and cool fightwear offerings. I know...you want one right? You really want one? Here's how to win this T, which will be shipped to you anywhere in the world...

Pre-amble
As you know I like to doodle, y'know, draw stuff either as pen and ink or digital art, it's what I do for a hobby and I enjoy it a lot. So do the guys at Scramble, but we're both scratching our heads as to what design we could both collaborate on. See, the thing is, I'm really good at psyched up crazy animals and Scramble like to design cool, toned down non-cliched fight themed imagery of a Japanese orientation. Our two styles could not be further apart.

So...

Here's what you do.

  1. Go visit and click 'like' on my Meerkatsu Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Meerkatsu
  2. Under the Post that says: "CONTEST #1. Tell me what beast to draw for Scramble T shirt and win a T-shirt"
  3. Write down your suggestion - that's right, just write it down - you be the art director.
  4. Wait to see if you win.

What happens next?

The contest will begin 15th February 8am GMT and end Sunday 20th February midnight GMT - so basically just six days to think of something creative for me to draw.

The lads at Scramble and I will pick the best answer from the list and the winner will be announced on the Scramble Facebook page on Wednesday 23rd February 3pm GMT.
http://www.facebook.com/scramblers

The winner wins a fabulous FIGHT NIGHT T-shirt - any colour, any size, delivered to their door, anywhere in the world. Okay we'll chuck in a Scramble gi patch too!

Win Scramble gi patch! (gi not included)

Some tips:

Only suggestions posted on my Facebook Meerkatsu page under that thread will be eligible.

But you can post any number of times (rude stuff or inappropriate posts will be deleted)

I don't care what design you suggest I try to draw, it could be extinct, extant, or completely made-up. It could be cute, it could be beastly, it could even not be an animal at all.

But bear in mind my drawing style (see my Facebook portfolio) and also the style that Scramble like to design with. Hopefully you can suggest some sort of hybrid. The most creative, original, imaginative yet still executable entry is the one that is most likely to win!

Oh and it should be vaguely grappling themed, though not a deal breaker.

And...if I can actually draw the thing, and Scramble agree to make the T-shirt - then we'll give you that T-shirt too. So potentially, THREE prizes just for clicking 'Like' and coming up with an original idea in word form. Yup, no sketches, just your words.

Cool huh? so get thinking....I'm waiting....

:D

Victor Estima seminar at Gracie Barra Southampton (Silverback Submissions).

Testicles! Funny ole things testicles, well they are if you have them. But not funny if you are attempting to armbar the crap out of someone and can't because your crown jewels get stuck in the way. Why mention this? Well, it was one of the questions asked by a student during the q and a portion of the Victor Estima seminar I attended yesterday. The student wanted to know if Victor (Gracie Barra black belt, younger brother of Braulio and himself someone who has placed at all the majors) could offer any tips on avoiding self inflicted nut cracking when performing armbars - to much laughter. Victor of course had an answer, as he had for every other question in this barn-stormingly brilliant seminar that focused on tips for tournament strategy and tactics. More about busting ball busters later...

Hey guys and girls, I now have a page on Facebook that I would love if you could 'like'. It'll be like a mini-blog where I'll mutter away on all things jiu jitsu, give previews of up and coming reviews, show more artwork, give away stuff, bitch, gossip and moan...y'know, just like I normally do on my usual Facebook page, only this one will be dedicated to all things BJJ and the other one will be just me moaning.
There's also a widget on the right hand side that I know is stupidly too wide. I will fix it soon. In the meantime, head on over and click 'like'.
Many thanks!

Summary:
A very well constructed training gi that offers lightweight comfort at a reasonably affordable price. The military themed logos and patchwork may appeal only to some, but I found this gi to fit very well and fun to wear.

Introduction

As viral campaigns go, the Submission Sniper brand seems to have done very well indeed. When I first saw a picture of the gi up on Facebook I initially thought it was a joke. I mean seriously, who would make a gi with all those crazy military style logos and then place a machine gun as a prop for the photo amid a bit of rubble? It struck me as either a genius of parody or some very odd marketing. But I guess the fact that I (among a ton of others) took notice was the point. It did not take long for word among the gi-obsessed BJJ crowd to chatter about the Submission Sniper, chief topic among which was THAT logo. I'll talk about the logo a little later on, but it wasn't long before curiosity got the better of me and after a few cool emails between the Submission Sniper owner and myself, I got myself a review sample of the Competition model. So let's take a look under the bonnet...

So you know that submission wrestling tournament within an MMA event thingy I told you about last week? The winner of the 8 man tournament gets to take home a cool £1,000. Yes, £1,000! By UK nogi standards, that’s a pretty good wage for a night’s work, compared with say, your average nogi tournament in which you win, a sweaty handshake and a medal.

I like to think that the ‘Submission 1000’ tournament at the Lockdown FC event in Stevengage on the 19th March is kind of a big deal. So in the run-up to the event, I’ve decided to introduce the people responsible for this ground-breaking tournament and the fighters who will be fighting. Kicking things off, will be the main man and founder of the whole thing, Darren Jones…

A road trip for me is never a straightforward proposition. If I don't get lost on the way, there is usually some other major drama or crisis that puts any attempt of mine to visit a far off distant BJJ academy in peril. Today, it was the turn to visit my very good friend Liam Wandi, he of the Part Time Grappler blog fame at his place of training, the Fighting Fit Martial Arts Centre in Manchester (aka the Labs) - and to attend a seminar run by the very excellent David Onuma. But, ahem, I kinda missed the seminar bit...

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm very excited to announce that new MMA fight promotion, Lockdown Fighting Championships has decided to add an 8-man submission wrestling (jiu jitsu no gi) tournament to their MMA fight event.

The Lockdown Fighting Championships will be held in Stevenage, UK, at the Liquid & Envy Nightclub on Saturday 19th March, 2011. It promises to be absolutely flipping awesome! Why? Because the 8 man grappling challenge features a hand-picked roll call of some of the very finest homegrown grappling talents currently on the scene right now. Guys who I absolutely rave about all the time whenever I see them compete on the BJJ tournament circuit! It's the first time a sub-grapp event has been hosted on an MMA bill. It's genius marketing and promises to be an utter joyfest for fight fans.

Here's the poster:

I'm pretty excited also because in my feable bid to understand more about MMA, including a jiu jitsu tournament is going to make me want to actually attend. Conversely, it's a great way for the MMA fan to witness the beauty of the no-gi game at its best (or go for a beer, pah, more room for me to gesticulate and punch my fist in the air with grapplefan delight!).

In the run-up to this amazing event, I'll be grabbing a few words with the main people involved and the fighters themselves. So watch this space!
