JIU JITSU GI AFTER-CARE GUIDE

By Seymour Yang

Introduction
It is quite possibly the worst scenario that any jiu jitsu enthusiast can experience - the just-bought gi that shrank too much. There can be no worse feeling than, after spending hours of research time and spending possibly hundreds of dollars on a new uniform, for it to end up being too small or in fact the opposite - a gi that refuses to shrink and is still too large after you wash it. Most gi companies will not return or exchange your gi after you have used it if there is nothing faulty with it. So how should one look after a gi after it has been bought?

This gi incorporates original art created by me for Tatami Fightwear who kindly hired my services. This report is not a gi review. It is a showcase of the art I created for the gi and my commentary on the design and material elements I chose to use for the gi. The photos show the pre-production samples, the final gi will be available to buy from Tatami Fightwear (and other retailers) around late March - April 2012. A full in depth review on the gi itself will be available from impartial gi reviewers soon.

Introduction
Last year I designed a rashguard themed around my illustrations of a honey badger munching on some tasty cobras. To my immense surprise, it was an amazing success selling hundreds and hundreds of units all over the world. I received tons of feedback from happy rash guard wearers, many of them saying one thing: when was I going to release the honey badger gi? Well, here it is. Okay not quite here yet, the sample I am modelling is the first and only copy in the world of the honey badger gi. But Tatami Fightwear's suppliers are making them as I write.

Here is a little more detail about the gi...

I took part in another tournament at Hereford over the weekend. The last event in December was very enjoyable and well run so when Dave Coles mentioned that he had found a fighter who was same age, rank and weight as me, I knew it was a match up I could not refuse.

I started off fairly brightly against my opponent, he pulled guard and I tried to keep posture not letting him close his guard or sink in his de la Riva hooks. I felt okay to be honest and reasonably in control, figuring out my next move in readiness to assert my slowly maturing guard passing game when for some stupid reason I decided to plant my hand under his armpit. He saw this and wrapped an overhook and cranked for a sort of inside guard americana. Something cracked and I yelled out loud. Verbal tap from me, game over. Uh oh. Thankfully nothing busted, just sore and it was a fantastic opportunity to experience a fight with someone exactly in my division. I have made mental notes on what I need to do to improve and hope we can meet again.

My thanks as ever to a brilliantly run tournament and so lovely to catch up with all my BJJ friends. I got the chance to wear my Honey Badger gi - the only one in the world right now! But I will blog about the honey badger gi in a post coming up soon. In the meantime, here are some photos:

Fight Soap in the US commissioned me to design cover art for a limited edition soap of theirs, naturally i was chuffed to be asked. The brief was wide open, I could draw anything as long as it would look good when printed 2x3 inches in size. That's really much, much smaller than I am used to creating for. It presented a couple of technical challenges which I detail on my Art Blog, so go visit there if you are interested in the design process.

In the meantime, you can buy this special edition of Fight Soap from their website - http://fightsoap.bigcartel.com/
I will update this entry once I know of UK and European distributors who are stocking this product. We're donating a share of proceeds from each bar to Tap Cancer Out - a BJJ and MMA focused charity dedicated to funding cancer research. I'll be collaborating with Tap Cancer Out on an art project at some point soon. You can read more about them here: http://www.tapcancerout.org/

So three great reasons to buy this bar - first, it's got my art on it!, second, it'll keep you clean and smelling of zest fruits for you after training shower, and finally, it's helping a worthy cause. Cheers!

So I'm browsing through my Facebook wallposts once day when I should be doing work when I notice some little sidebar adverts pop up. This is unusual for me because like 99.99999% of people, I take absolutely no notice of adverts on Facebook. But this one stuck out. Why? Because it had a really cool illustration of an octopus grappling with a man. Yes! I love octopuses (never octopi, apparently). I had to find out more!

Summary
A bold and creative debut gi design from new Guam based fightwear brand, the Competidor Guardian offers slick eye catching style along with a superbly fitting and lightweight uniform. The myriad of tiny little design elements added to the attention to detail paid over the production values and construction. This is a very solid and likable gi.
Website: www.thecompetidor.com
Price: $160USD + shipping and customs if ordering from outside US.

Disclosure: I have been commissioned in the past by Competidor Brand to produce artwork for t-shirts. I have had no contribution to this design. This and the following report will be my own personal opinion and remain as objective and unbiased as I can.

Summary
I compare two gi models from new brand Kingz, the Comp 550 and the ultra lightweight Comp 420. Both gis experienced minimal shrinkage and fitted me very well at A1 along the sleeves but seemed long down the jacket length. I had some issues over the trousers on both models but was very pleased with the neatly undertucked inner logo tape - a particular problem for me with 'scratchiness' in previous reviews. Overall, a very fine effort from Kingz.

Disclosure: This review represents my own opinions. I have been hired as a freelance designer and illustrator in the past by numerous fightwear companies, including Kingz, however I am unconnected with these two gis.
